Species richness peaks for intermediate levels of biomass in a fractal succession with quasi-neutral interactions

چکیده
The mechanisms that promote species richness, including net community interactions, are considered central to the investigation of the consequences of biodiversity loss for ecosystem functioning. Recently, some empirical studies at large spatiotemporal scales suggest that increasing species richness within natural communities results in a finer division of biomass among species rather than an increase in total biomass. In parallel, the most common pattern observed in nature is the peaked relationship between diversity and productivity estimated as total biomass. Thus, the aim of our study is to provide model predictions for the diversity biomass relationship with various levels of net species interactions within communities: negative, neutral, quasi-neutral and positive. Using a scaling relationship between the number of species and total community biomass, we propose a new self-similar process of biomass partitioning during a community assembly process. At each step of the succession, K more species appear that are A times less abundant on average giving K /A; the parameter d being a fractal dimension related to the nature of interactions among coexisting species. Our results, compared to those from meta-analyses about empirical diversity productivity relationships, illustrate that quasi-neutral interactions among coexisting species lead to the most commonly observed pattern: an ‘envelope’ where diversity peaks at intermediate values of total biomass, i.e. that the area below the hump-backed line (considered as the upper boundary) is filled with data points.

Relationships between Species Diversity and Biomass in Mountainous Habitats in Zagros Rangeland (Case Study: Baneh, Kurdistan, Iran)
Species diversity, richness and biomasses (aboveground biomass) and their relationships are the key variables of ecosystems. This study was conducted to determine the relationship of Species Diversity (SD) and Species Richness (SR) with Above-Ground Biomass (AGB) at a local scale at 5 different habitats (shrubland, forbland, grassland, shrub-forbland and forb-shrubland) in Zagros mountains in w...
متن کاملSpatial Structure Alters the Shape of the Unimodal Species Richness-Biomass Relationship in a Neutral Model
Variation in individual density may explain the unimodal richness-biomass relationship in which species richness peaks at an intermediate level of total biomass. However, it is unclear how individual density is regulated by community thinning (i.e., mortality due to competition with neighbors) as total above-ground biomass increases. We developed a simulation model which demonstrates that the s...
متن کاملChanges in Species Richness and Community Productivity during Succession on the Loess Plateau (china)
We investigated changes in species richness, community biomass, and productivity during secondary forest succession in Ziwuling area of the Loess Plateau of China. Species richness(number of taxa) increased as the succession proceeds, and peaked at the climax forest community, but the richness growth gradually slowed down as the succession advanced. Community biomass rapidly increased from the ...
متن کاملEffects of species diversity on community biomass production change over the course of succession.
Over the past decade an increasing number of studies have experimentally manipulated the number of species in a community and examined how this alters the aggregate production of species biomass. Many of these studies have shown that the effects of richness on biomass change through time, but we have limited understanding of the mechanisms that produce these dynamic trends. Here we report the r...
